Domestic Partnership

Domestic Partnership

The Domestic Partnership registry is intended to assist unmarried adult couples who reside or are employed within the County of Los Angeles and who are applying for domestic partnership benefits from employers. To be eligible, couples must be 18 years of age or older and at least one partner must reside or work within Los Angeles County (Los Angeles County Municipal Code Section 2.210.020). The Statement of Domestic Partnership is public record.

Filing for a domestic partnership is NOT the same as filing for a marriage license. Los Angeles County’s local program is separate and distinct from the State of California’s Domestic Partnership Program, and filing of domestic partnership within Los Angeles County is NOT the same as filing for domestic partnership with the State of California’s Domestic Partnership Program. For more information about the State’s Program, please visit the Secretary of State’s website or call (916)653-4984. State registration forms are available on the Secretary of State’s website (https://www.sos.ca.gov/registries/domestic-partners-registry/forms-fees/) and at the Office of Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. Those who are currently in a domestic partnership under the County's local program must complete a statement of termination of domestic partnership if they plan on applying for a marriage license. For information on terminating a domestic partnership filed with the State, please refer to the Secretary of State's website at https://www.sos.ca.gov/registries/domestic-partners-registry.

Before filing, please read the important notice below.
